Mesa Verde Magic
We started our day on the 2.2 mile Point Lookout Trail. The first half mile was a steep climb but from there on it was level with breathtaking view after breathtaking view.
We returned to camp for an early dinner then headed out to the Knife's Edge trail for sunset. A rock slide had recently taken out part of the trail, but it was easy enough to navigate around. The sunset was spectacular. We met two men who had been meeting at this same spot as often as they could annually for 30 years.
We rose early the next day to hike Petroglyph Point before the heat set in. The hike was amazing with a lot of rock scrambling that gave you a real feel for how the Pueblo people once traveled.
From there, we started checking out the famous dwellings starting with the Spruce House.
We booked a 12:30 Cliff Palace tool as ranger led tours are the only way to directly access the sites. With 150 rooms and over 20 Kivas, this large site was likely a gathering place for many of the villages. Impressive that much is still intact considering it was built in 1200.
We viewed several others from a distance on the way back to camp.
We returned to camp and met a woman from Washington state with two Northwest Farm Terriers, a unofficial breed from Sequim. For those that met my dog Loki, she was a Northwest Farm Terrier. She was incredibly surprised when Gorm confirmed the breed with her.
Tomorrow, we are off to Moab.
